MS Multiple Sclerosis

Explore neurology with this detailed brain model, essential tools, and educational element

The diagnosis of multiple sclerosis (MS) raises many questions and can be worrying at first.

At our neurology and headache practice, we aim to provide you with comprehensive information and the best possible care. MS is a chronic inflammatory disease of the central nervous system that affects the brain and spinal cord. It is not contagious and has many facets, which is why a precise diagnosis and individualized treatment are of utmost importance.

What happens with MS?

In multiple sclerosis, the body's immune system mistakenly attacks the myelin sheath. The myelin sheath is the protective covering that surrounds nerve fibers and ensures rapid signal transmission in the brain and spinal cord. Inflammation damages this sheath, leading to a slowing or blocking of nerve signals. The resulting lesions can form in various locations in the central nervous system, which explains the diverse symptoms of MS.

The different forms of MS

To find the right treatment, it is crucial to determine the type of MS. There are three main forms:

  • Relapsing-remitting MS (RRMS): This is the most common form, affecting approximately 85% of patients at diagnosis. It is characterized by acute attacks in which new symptoms appear or existing ones worsen. These attacks are followed by periods of improvement (remission). Symptoms may resolve completely or partially.

  • Secondary progressive MS (SPMS): This form develops from relapsing-remitting MS in some patients. After a period of relapses, symptoms gradually worsen, independent of further relapses.

  • Primary progressive MS (PPMS): This rare form of MS is characterized by a continuous worsening of symptoms from the beginning, without clearly defined relapses. The worsening may stop or temporarily improve from time to time, but the general trend is slow progression.

In our practice, we offer comprehensive neurological diagnostics and, in close cooperation with you, create a treatment plan tailored to your specific situation.
